According to the outlet’s sources, Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters sequel will focus on a single mother and her family, with Carrie Coon being eyed to portray the mom while Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard would play her son. Sony reportedly declined to comment on plot details and it is unknown how these characters will be tied to the Ghostbusters team.
In addition to her work on The Leftovers, Carrie Coon is known for projects such as Fargo, Gone Girl, and The Post. Meanwhile, Finn Wolfhard is set to reprise his role as Mike Wheeler when Stranger Things returns to Netflix on July 4, 2019.
Whether or not original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray will return is currently unknown (Harold Ramis, who portrayed Egon Spengler, passed away in 2014), though the new film will be a sequel to the first two Ghostbusters movies and is set in the present day with new, younger characters.
Directed by Jason Reitman from a script he co-wrote with Poltergeist remake director Gil Kena, the new Ghostbusters will reportedly begin production in Calgary, Alberta around June 25th and is expected to last about 15 weeks total.
The Untitled Ghostbusters Sequel is scheduled to be released in 2020.
