M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Glass’ Was Almost More Than Three Hours Long

According to filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, his sequel to Unbreakable and Split, Glass, was almost a movie with a runtime of more than three hours.

After the latest trailer for Glass dropped yesterday, the anticipation for the sequel is at an all-time high. Fans are very eager to see how these characters world will collide and what twists await everyone in the Shyamalan film. M. Knight recently sat down with Digital Spy, where he unveiled that the film was originally very long.

“The script was really long, it was almost 150 pages and the first cut of the movie was 3 hours and 20 minutes, it was really long. Then it started tightening [and] tightening until we got to the 2.08 that you can see.”

The director claimed he wasn’t concerned about rehashing what had already happened when developing the script. He made this very clear early on that this one would be approached as a standalone.

“I said to [rights owners] Disney and Universal, ‘Pretend there’s no previous movies and I came to you and I said that I want to make a movie about a hospital that treats people who believe they’re superheroes and three of their patients escape’. I want to make you that movie, will you make that movie? Oh and by the way, it stars Bruce Willis, Sam Jackson, James McAvoy and Sarah Paulson. Will you make that movie?’ Yes, you’ll make that movie… Person XYZ who hasn’t seen the other two will come to see that.”

From this news, this story seems like it will be a brand new experience different from the other chapters in the series. The film will be a treat for its fanbase and still be a great watch for those new to this series. Fans will luckily get a Glass film that gets right to the point and has a reasonable runtime. These worlds will collide this January.

From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.

Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

Written and directed by M Night Shyamalan, Glass stars James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Spencer Treat Clark, and Charlayne Woodard.

Glass will be released in theaters on January 18, 2019.
