Godzilla: King of Monsters is the third installment to the cinematic MonsterVerse from Legendary Pictures following Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island. With Gareth Edwards exiting the sequel to focus on a smaller feature following Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the new film is being directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus) from a script co-written by Dougherty and his Krampus partner Zach Shield. Production is currently underway in Atlanta, Georgia. Alex Garcia and Zach Shields serve as exec producers on the project.
While Thomas Tull stepped down from his position as CEO of Legendary Entertainment due to pressure from Legendary’s new owner — Dalian Wanda Group — he remains attached as a producer of the film as well as future MonsterVerse installments including the fourth installment Godzilla vs. Kong as a producer.
The film stars Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Zhang Ziyi, Anthony Ramos, Ken Watanabe, Randy Havens, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins and Charles Dance. Here’s the official synopsis:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters on March 22, 2019, and will be followed by Godzilla vs. Kong on May 22, 2020.
