Godzilla was reintroduced to the box office back in 2014. Afterward, King Kong was given his own solo film that placed him in the same cinematic universe as Godzilla in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. Naturally, it was believed that Godzilla and King Kong would go up against one another in the next MonsterVerse film.
The studio, however, went in another direction and decided to have Godzilla return once again and do battle with Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. A film that’s projections placed it north of $50 million at opening came up just short of that number, coming in at only $49 million.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened up the lowest out of the three current MonsterVerse films. Singing it’s way to the second spot is the Taron Egerton led Rocketman which opened at $25 million followed by Ma creeping its way into third place with $18 million.

Here’s the synopsis for Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Directed by Michael Dougherty from a script written by Max Borenstein, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, O’Shea Jackson Jr., with Ken Watanabe and Zhang Ziyi.
