Fox’s Gotham has introduced many of Batman’s iconic Rogues Gallery but one character that the series has skirted around has been the Caped Crusader’s most iconic foe, the Joker. Many characters on the show have been teased to become the Clown Prince of Crime but the closest character to the Joker’s persona is Jeremiah, played by Shameless actor Cameron Monaghan. The actor previously played Jerome, who was also a Jokeresque character on Gotham, but that character left the series last season and now the actor plays his evil twin brother.
In the latest episode of Gotham’s fifth and final season, Jeremiah recreated a special night for Bruce Wayne to relive, the murder of his parents. Earlier in the season, it was teased that Cameron Monaghan’s twisted character had something in store for Bruce Wayne that includes two mysterious characters. Given the current season’s many twisted resurrections at the hands of Doctor Hugo Strange (BD Wong), many fans suspected that the mystery duo would somehow be the dead parents of David Mazouz’s young billionaire, Martha and Thomas Wayne, which turned out to be true after all.
During tonight’s episode, Jeremiah wanted to recreate the tragic night of Bruce Wayne’s parents being murdered, so he staged a whole nightmarish event that involved two nameless characters playing the roles of Martha and Thomas Wayne. The twisted experience for Bruce Wayne didn’t end there though. When the young hero approached what appeared to be his dead parents, he found out that it was actually Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Lee Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) taking the place of his parents. Jeremiah’s plan wasn’t simply to recreate the event, it was supposed to open up a whole new batch of scars and torment to bring Cameron Monaghan’s sadistic villain and David Mazouz’s young vigilante closer together.
Much like the original night that the Waynes were murdered, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) was present for the event. In the first episode of Gotham, Selina Kyle stood by and watched while Martha and Thomas Wayne were gunned down, something she has repeatedly said that she regrets through all five seasons of the series. This time was different though and Selina came to the rescue of Bruce, Jim, and Lee.
