Ben McKenzie used an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to make the case that the original Batman was Gotham's Commissioner, Jim Gordon.
Talking on The Late Show with host Stephen Colbert, McKenzie mentioned that he wants his kids to believe that Gordon is every bit as cool as Batman before going on to explain his reasoning that Gordon is basically the proto-Batman:
“I’m working on that… They’re at the perfect age to be brain-washed — 4 and 2, you gotta start early… So, I explained to them the ‘truth,’ which is that, without Jim Gordon there would be no Batman. And that, if you really think about it — and I encourage you to really think about it — you could almost argue that Gordon was the first Batman. He’s the first lawman in Gotham City, and he’s keeping it together.”
It’s a fair point to be made, but I think it’s safe to say that we won’t be seeing Jim Gordon suiting up anytime soon.
