‘Gotham’: Cameron Monaghan Explains Process Behind Jerome’s Laugh

It’s not an easy task to step into The Joker’s shoes, but one actor who’s definitely on the right track is Cameron Monaghan as Jerome Valeska in FOX’s Gotham. And while many may argue that he’s not confirmed to be the young version of the Joker, his character’s arc and fate are undeniable linked to the origins of the villain.

Now in an interview clip from Gotham Season 3, Monaghan opens up about why he took the role, his experience and fears as Jerome, and of course the iconic laugh.

‘The laugh is extremely important. Mark Hamill who’s been voicing the character for over 20 years has talked a lot about the idea that it’s not specifically one laugh. It can be crueler, it can be more excited, it can be giggly.’

‘What’s interesting in this season is the voice and the laugh have changed. I’m kind of playing with the idea that he was stabbed in the throat and so it would in some way change who he is,’ He added. ‘I think that was important for me. Is making sure it was iconic but at the same time not like you’re just playing recording every time he steps into the scene.’

It’s really no wonder fans cheered when it was announced that Jerome would be coming back from the dead in Gotham. Monaghan is doing an amazing job as the character and we can’t wait to see more of him.
