‘Gotham’ Star Shane West Defends Bane’s Look

Bane’s look is revealed for the final season of Gotham and is polarizing audiences but the actor who plays the character, Shane West, comes in his defense in a new interview with The Wrap.

Next week, Bane will be making his appearance on Gotham, the prequel to the story of Batman. There has been a lot of discussion about the look of the character from unofficial and official photos, with the FOX drama receiving a lot of criticism for its portrayal of Bane. Some have went as far saying they aren’t fans of the look at all, but West tells TheWrap that he loves it.

I loved the costume. For me, we had a whole different thing, because I was out there for two-and-a-half months doing the build and it took a long time to put that costume together. But the point of the costume always, which is apparently the point of what they do for all of their heroes and villains on the show — which I wasn’t aware of — they build here. Some of the photos are better than others. And then, I think once you see it on film- and now that I finally have, I’m very happy with it the way it was filmed, the way it was shot.

West shows great enthusiasm for the look and the role. He even later states in the interview that he’s done his research. He will be bringing in influences from The Dark Knight Rises and Batman: The Animated Series to bring the character to life. Despite what preconceived notions audiences have of Bane, West is confident that the role will still satisfy audiences and fans of the character.

Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Morena Baccarin as Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma/The Riddler, and Chris Chalk as Lucius Fox.

Gotham airs on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. on FOX.
