‘Gotham’ Star On ‘Joker’ Origin Movie Tone And How It Differs From The Show

Gotham has been building up a very different version of the Joker and now actor Cameron Monaghan opens up about the tonal differences between his character Jerome, and the upcoming Joker origin movie.

The upcoming Joker origin movie from director Todd Phillips is one of the most anticipated comic book movies of next year because it’s so unconventional. Given the Joker’s mysterious history, it seems like he wouldn’t be the right subject for a solo movie but the set videos and images alone have already won over fans. Joaquin Phoenix and Jared Leto aren’t the only actors to play the Joker in recent memory though.

The Jerome/Jeremiah situation on the TV series Gotham has presented fans with a very different kind of clown prince of crime, but it certainly proved that the Joker’s origin could be told effectively. Now that Gotham is nearing its end and the Joker movie is on the horizon, Monaghan was asked about the differences between his character on Gotham and Joaquin Phoenix’s version on the big screen. While speaking with IGN, he first discussed how he’s been avoiding looking at video and images to not affect his performance.

“I am trying not to look at it too much because I just don’t want to make something that’s the same as what he is doing.”

But with the internet and TV, and all kinds of media outlets, Monaghan admits that it’s hard to avoid.

“But it is inescapable.”

Monaghan then went on to break down what makes Gotham so different from what the movie is going to be and it all has to do with tone.

“We indulge in being campy, or ridiculous, or fun in a way they probably won’t be able to do. It is a different goal and way of going about it, but I am excited to see what they do.”

The actor then once again assured fans that the two DC adaptations are definitely different.

“Thankfully it is very different from what we’re doing.”

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Gotham and Joker as soon as more information becomes available. Are you more excited for Joker or the upcoming final season of Gotham? “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, Shea Whigham, and Robert De Niro.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
