Superhero and comic book properties aren’t just exploding on the big screen, but also the small screen with both Marvel and DC Comics TV shows existing on almost all the major networks and cable. Marvel currently has Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC where it is entering its fourth season, while on The CW, we have The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow.
Over at FOX, they have the Vertigo property Lucifer and the DC drama Gotham, which is the focus of this story as Bruno Heller, showrunner and executive producer of the Batman prequel, had some big things to say about superhero shows. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Edinburgh Television Festival, Heller stated that he doesn’t think superheroes work quite as well on television.
“I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV. Probably because of the costume thing. TV is about real people and faces, and not so much about magic and the supernatural things. That’s why he chose James Gordon as the focus character of the show.”
What do you think of Heller’s statement about superheroes not working on television? Do you agree or disagree with Heller? Let us know in the comments below.
Gotham Season 3 begins on Monday, September 19 at 8/7c on FOX.
