Last night’s episode of Gotham centered on Jeremiah’s twisted recreation of the murder of Bruce’s parents and his creation of a new toxin, culminating with a showdown in Ace Chemicals after Bruce and Selina rescued the captured Jim Gordan and Leslie Thompkins. However, when Gordan and Thompson initially snuck into the factory, fans could spot a vat of chemicals with on a sign on the side that read, “Ace Chemicals 1989.” This easter egg is a likely a nod to Tim Burton’s Batman.
Tim Burton’s first Batman movie was released in theaters in 1989 and depicted the Joker’s origin in a similar way as Detective Comics #168, in which the Caped Crusader foils a heist of Ace Chemicals by the Red Hood Gang. In both the film and the comics, Batman’s confrontation with the gang leader results in the latter falling into a vat of chemicals and emerging as the insane Joker.
