'Guardians 2': Drax & Mantis 'Share A Very Childlike Innocence' Says Dave Bautista. The actor discusses the pair's relationship.
The individual character development in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of the highlights of the film. Other highlights include Dave Bautista’s Drax and his sense of humor. He tends to be very blunt and says things without thinking because… well, he isn’t human and doesn’t understand that it comes off wrong in several instances.
Bautista spoke with CinemaBlend and said that one of the primary connections between Drax and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis, a new character to the film, is that they both “share a very childlike innocence.”
“We have decided that Drax and Mantis share a very childlike innocence, and I think that links them together. More than anything he’s taken on a big brother type role. That’s the way I look at it — not so much Mantis being a surrogate daughter, but almost like a little sister. That’s what the relationship, to me, feels more like. And that’s kind of the way we play it.”
Their relationship in the film is certainly intriguing and is played for comedy, but it’s easy to see that they both are naive in a way and perhaps this is truly why they get along on a different level than with the other characters.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently playing in theaters.
