‘Guardians 2’ Passes $800M Globally; ‘Pirates 5’ Crosses $100M In China

Both Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales have proven to be major successes for Disney on a global front.

Right now, it’s a pretty great time to be a shareholder at Disney – both of their major May releases (Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) have performed incredibly well on a global scale.

Deadline has revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 has made upwards of $800M as of today. If we count the early international rollout, that’s 36 days after the film first premiered. While the film’s overall performance is slowing down as Summer competition starts to arrive and it doesn’t look likely that the film will make $1B as some had speculated it might, the movie’s still holding over pretty well from weekend to weekend and should be considered another big success for the seemingly-unstoppable Marvel Studios, who will be releasing three films in a single year for the first time with July’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and November’s Thor: Ragnarok.

In the meantime, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is sailing on smoother waters than its somewhat-disappointing $78.5M domestic opening weekend would initially indicate, as the film continues to overperform internationally with a $360M+ global total after 8 days of being out on an international scale. China in particular seems to have an affinity for the movie, as it’s made more than $100M in less than a week. While critics have slammed the movie, a good portion of America’s general movie-going audience seem to be happy with Captain Jack Sparrow’s return.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 is playing in theaters right now. The film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, and Kurt Russell as Ego. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is also playing. The film stars Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brendon Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin McNally, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom.
