'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' director James Gunn shares a story about how Michael Rooker fell asleep while filming a key scene.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 offered fans an inside look at the history and inner turmoil of the main team, but the film also developed characters who had previously played supporting roles, including Michael Rooker’s Yondu Udonta. After Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s father, Ego the Living Planet, initiated his plan to consume the galaxy, the Guardians successfully foiled his plot, but not without suffering loss on their side. Sacrificing himself to save Quill, Yondu was laid to rest after his surrogate son delivered a moving eulogy for the man who had raised him. During a Facebook Q & A session, director James Gunn revealed that while the scene may have been emotional for audiences and the characters, filming the sequence was a little more humorous for the cast and crew.
Gunn recounted how Michael Rooker had a difficult time making it through the scene without dozing off.
“I have some very funny video of Chris giving his speech and crying and in the middle of that, Rooker falling asleep. He didn’t fall asleep once. He fell asleep 10 times.”
Most would agree that Rooker delivered a powerful performance in the film, one that probably took a lot of energy and dedication to his craft. So, perhaps he earned the right the take a moment to rest when the opportunity presented itself?
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
