‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Earns $17 Million At Thursday Box Office

Marvel Studios' 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' earned a total of $17 million at Thursday night preview screenings of the latest superhero film.


Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has finally arrived in theaters, though a number fans were able to watch the highly anticipated film last night during preview screenings. Now, Variety reports that the latest Marvel Studios film earned a total of $17 million, setting the film up to make a more than impressive opening weekend debut.

Variety reports that the film is expected to open with between $150 million to $170 million and should the film gross at least $160 million this weekend, it would be only the 11th feature to accomplish this feat. Disney is reportedly projecting the film to open with $150 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s Thursday night gross has given the film the third largest opening preview intake for a Marvel film, placing it behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s $27.6 million gross and Captain America: Civil War‘s $25 million gross.

As of Thursday, the film’s total foreign gross was $167 million.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
