‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’: James Gunn On Changing Things From The Comics

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn opened up about changing things from the source material.

When drawing from the source material to make movies, in this case, comic books, it’s always a bit of a tricky situation. What traits or storylines do you pull? What do you keep and what do you drop? No movie adaptation of a comic book story is going to look exactly the same. In fact, it rarely ever does. They’re both very different mediums and no matter how you feel about the source material, the movie is going to be its own thing.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn recognizes this and, when speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, says that he just tries to “do what’s best for the movie.” Here’s what he had to say on the matter:

“I always do what’s best for the movie. A lot of times, that means taking things from the source material and other times it’s changing things. I’ve changed a lot already from the comics with the Guardians. Groot’s personality in the first Guardians, which people loved, was nothing like his personality in the comics. He didn’t have that puppy dog innocence that we love about Groot. I don’t restraint myself in any way when it comes to using stuff from the comics or not using it.”

Directed by James GunnGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released digitally in HD, 4K Ultra HD, and Disney Movies Anywhere on August 8 followed by a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 22. Currently, Gunn is working on the third installment of the trilogy.
