The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero was approached to play a major role in what would have been the third installment of the fan-favorite Marvel property directed by James Gunn. At the moment, however, it looks like Nicotero is no longer attached to the project.
During a recent interview, Nicotero told Comicbook.com that he and Gunn talked about collaborating together on the unnamed Guardians of the Galaxy 3:
We had a great experience on Suicide Squad. Gunn and I had talked about collaborating on [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3], so I’d be excited to work with him. We had never really had a chance to work together, so that would be fun.
He then talked about the conversation he had regarding a possible collaboration:
Listen, I like his stuff a lot. And when Guardians Vol. 3 was starting to heat up last summer, they had called and they were like, ‘Listen,’ you know? I mean, ‘Gunn really likes your stuff, and we’d love to talk about the possibility of you guys collaborating on some designs,’ and I was really excited about it. So hopefully we can continue nourishing that relationship.
Gunn, of course, was set to direct the film and with Nicotero bringing the film to life with his expertise in effects and character design.
Production on the film was set to begin last month, but the sudden removal of Gunn from the project due to some controversial tweets dating as far as 2009 has since halted its development. Marvel currently has no director in line to replace Gunn.
The ever-popular Walking Dead series first aired back on October 10th, 2010 and now has over 9 seasons of zombie-horror filled episodes. The show focuses on a group of survivors months and now years after a mysterious zombie virus takes over the world.
The Walking Dead is currently on its mid-season break and will return to AMC this coming Sunday, February 1o.
Nicotero and his KNB Effects Group’s work can be seen in the upcoming Spawn reboot directed by Todd McFarlane.

James Gunn had completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and production was scheduled to begin early next year. However, the project has been put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy, though Disney and Marvel Studios are reportedly intending to use his script.
