After right-wing commentators brought offensive Tweets written by James Gunn back into the public sphere, Disney terminated their relationship with the filmmaker and fired him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While some fans have called on Disney to rehire James Gunn as the director of the film, others have suggested potential candidates who could replace him. Taika Waititi has been a popular choice among fans, but the Thor: Ragnarok director confirmed he will not sit in the director’s chair for the third Guardians film:
“Nope. Not doing that movie. I’m hanging out with [Marvel] still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. I want to do another movie.”
While Thor: Ragnarok demonstrated Taiki Waititi could bring the colorful flair and comedic tone the Guardians films are known for, the filmmaker explained that he “didn’t really” have conversations with Marvel about taking the job and noted why he does not want to succeed James Gunn as the director of Vol. 3:
“For me, that’s James’ film. Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad.'”

James Gunn had completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and production was scheduled to begin early next year. However, the project has been put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy, though Disney and Marvel Studios are reportedly intending to use his script.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
