‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Concept Art Reveals Early Mantis Design

Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park unveiled an early concept design for Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduced Pom Klementieff’s Mantis to the film series, although this incarnation of the character had a relatively different look than her comic book counterpart. However, the concept artists on the film went through a number of designs for Mantis before settling on the final version and artist Andy Park revealed one of those illustrations on his official Instagram account.

The illustration reveals a Mantis design that more closely resembles her look featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as opposed to the more insect-looking version previously revealed. In the caption included with the post, Park noted that Mantis’ final look was ultimately a collaboration between the concept artists, costume designers, makeup and hair team, and the visual effects wizards.

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, Gunn will begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC, which he is currently editing from the safety from his home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Details on the third chapter of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
