The third Guardians of the Galaxy film is still without a director after Disney terminated their relationship with James Gunn, a decision the company made after offensive Tweets the filmmaker posted years ago were brought back to the public sphere by alt-right commentators. Bumblebee director Travis Knight was rumored to be among the filmmakers Marvel was considering to replace Gunn, but Knight explained that he intends to return to Laika following his work on the Transformers spin-off:
“After Bumblebee, my goal is to return to work at the animation studios Laika, my ‘child’ bringing with me all the baggage of experiences I have gained with this project. I’m a huge fan of what Marvel did, it’s no surprise for anyone to know that as a child I was a huge fan of comics. But no, it’s just a rumor!”
James Gunn had completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and production was scheduled to begin early next year. However, the project has been put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy, though Disney and Marvel Studios are said to be intent on using his script.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
