‘Guardians Vol. 2’: Michael Rooker & Chris Pratt On Yondu’s Role

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt and Michael Rooker discuss Yondu's expanded role in the sequel.

It’s hard to believe that we’re only a month away from the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. One of the most exciting things about James Gunn’s upcoming sequel is the characters that are joining the team this time around, including the new character Mantis (Pom Klementieff), the returning Nebula (Karen Gillan), and perhaps most exciting for some (myself included), the one and only Michael Rooker, who returns as Yondu.

While speaking to USA Today, who also released a new image of Yondu and Starlord, which you can check out above, the sequel’s star Chris Pratt commented on Yondu’s expanded role in the new film:

“In the first one, he was a guy chasing us. And in this movie, it becomes a little more than that.”

Rooker himself also spoke about where Yondu is at with his relationship with Peter Quill:

“Yondu has made peace with this kid that he’s raised and we’re having a good time.”

USA Today goes on to say that Rooker also stated that Yondu doesn’t think very highly of Peter’s real father Ego (played by Kurt Russell). After all, he did hire Yondu to kidnap a young Peter from Earth when he was a child.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Glenn Close and Kurt Russell.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
