Logan managed something that few comic adaptations manage to accomplish: it feels like a great film first and a great comic adaptation second. The only notable examples of something similar, for my money, would be films like the Christopher Nolan Batman films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and some television adaptations like Daredevil and Legion. While rewatching Logan recently, Guillermo Del Toro took to Twitter to praise the film, saying it “enhances the mythology it closes” and betters the films that preceded it.
More than that, in subsequent tweets, Guillermo Del Toro praised James Mangold’s intricate staging of the action, noting that it feels raw without ever being vulgar and showy. He enjoyed when Mangold echoed the film Shane and said that the Logan director is taking the mantle and carrying it.
But this praise didn’t go unseen by the director of the film himself. James Mangold soon entered the fray and responded to Guillermo Del Toro’s words, saying that he’s learned over this experience that it’s not box office and critics that give him satisfaction. It’s giving himself satisfaction first — phrasing — and the respect and kindness of his peers. Here, have a look at Del Toro’s original tweet and James Mangold’s response.
It’s a testament to the film’s quality that a director like Guillermo Del Toro would tweet his support and praise for Logan and what James Mangold managed to accomplish. But what have been your thoughts on Logan since its initial release? And what do you think of Guillermo Del Toro’s praise for the film, as well as James Mangold’s response? Let us know in the comments below.
Directed by James Mangold and released in 2017, Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Boyd Holbrook, and Richard E. Grant. The film is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
