Guillermo del Toro Promises “Huge Surprises” For ‘Pacific Rim 2’

It seems like this summer has been what Pacific Rim fans have been waiting for, with casting and story updates steadily rolling in. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 film, to be titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, has been in development for quite a while now, making fans more and more anxious about the movie’s fate.

A handful of casting announcements have been released recently, and producer Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that it’s “active and in progress”. When pressed a bit further on the movie, he promised that “there are a couple of huge surprises” in the film itself. He wouldn’t divulge on any more precious details though, out of respect for director Steven S. DeKnight: “I did the first one, he’s doing the second.”

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will feature the amazing John Boyega as Stacker Pentecost’s son, and Cailee Spaeny signed on as the female lead. Others joining the cast includes Jing Tian and Levi Meaden. Charlie Hunnam will not return due to a conflict in schedules, and unfortunately Maisie Williams couldn’t join the cast for the same reason – much to the disappointment to del Toro and fans alike.

The Pacific Rim sequel will arrive in theaters on February 23rd, 2018.
