The last Power Rangers film was released in 2017 under the Lionsgate banner, but in early 2018 Hasbro purchased the rights to the Power Rangers from Saban and was previously reported to be hoping to do a continuation of the story they have begun. However, Hasbro had an earnings call with investors last month and reaffirmed plans for more Power Rangers films. Whether or not it will be a reboot or serve as a sequel to the last film was not clarified.
Since the success of the G.I. Joe and Transformers films, Hasbro and Paramount Pictures have renewed their film partnership and that will likely be the home for the Power Rangers is Hasbro elects to continue making films with the franchise.
As a fan of the new Power Rangers, it would be nice to see the studio continue from the story already set in the last film, but it’s understandable why Hasbro/Paramount would want to explore their options.
The 2017 Power Rangers film was not your typical box office hit and as we all know the studios want to make sure producing a film makes great financial sense rather than throwing stuff at the development board and seeing what sticks. Also, its young cast has since started filling up their schedules with high profile projects since the film’s release.
Although, if the current cast has a sudden spike in star power, it’s not out of the question that Paramount would want to use that and explore a sequel bringing back actors Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, and Ludi Lin.
What direction do you think Hasbro should go with the Power Rangers? Should they continue on the story already began by Saban and Lionsgate or just reboot it altogether again? Sound off in the comment section below!
