Speaking with BuzzFeed’s Jarett Wieselman at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Atwell had nothing but praise for Wonder Woman, calling it a “a triumph” and “pitch-perfect.” Here’s the full quote:
“I thought it was a triumph. I came out of that walking on air, and I think what’s brilliant about is, it’s a genre piece, it’s a superhero movie, it’s pitch-perfect from Gal’s performance to the script to the music, it has just the right amount of tongue in cheek humor, it’s engaging, and I was so surprised by the end of it. I thought, Here we go! 76 years in the making that’s breaking box office records and it’s led by a woman and it’s directed by a woman – I was like, ‘Patty! F–cking! Jenkins! YESSS!’ And what it means for all of us because it’s not just women are great; it’s going, come on, let’s represent who we really are as women. They did it beautifully. Not only did they pull it off, they just were like, Boom! They excelled.”
This past weekend at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Warner Bros. announced that a sequel to Wonder Woman is officially in the works. The news came as no surprise as the first film has already grossed more than $780 million at the worldwide box office and is looking to cross the $800 million mark any day now.
Details about the sequel’s plot have yet to be revealed, but it’s been said that it would be another period piece set during the closing years of the Cold War. Jenkins is expected to return to the director’s chair, but negotiations are still ongoing.
Wonder Woman 2 hits theaters on December 13, 2019, but fans can catch Gadot as the superheroine before then in this November’s superhero team-up movie Justice League.
