HBO Max Will Have Every DC Movie From The Past Decade, Including ‘Joker’

HBO Max will feature a lot of DC content with the first year of launch, including this year’s surprise mega-hit Joker.

HBO Max is set to become the go-to streaming location for all of WarnerMedia’s major brands, so it’s of little surprise that DC is no different. Today, they’ve revealed that the past decade of DC films (which includes WatchmenJonah HexGreen LanternThe Dark Knight RisesREDMan of SteelRED 2Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeSuicide Squad, The LEGO Batman MovieWonder WomanJustice LeagueTeen Titans GO! To the MoviesAquaman, Shazam! The Kitchen, and Joker) will be available by the end of the first year, which includes the entirety of the DC Extended Universe thus far. Furthermore, HBO Max will also be home to every single Superman and Batman film ever at the end of the same period.

The announcement was made at today’s recent panel for HBO Max, and the official Twitter page for the streaming service formally announced their DC plans in the tweet below:

What these changes mean for the existing DC Universe streaming service remain unclear at this time, but it seems likely that it will experience a major shift as HBO Max becomes AT&T and WarnerMedia’s #1 focus in the streaming world. With Joker poised to have a shot at becoming the most unlikely movie to make $1 billion at the global box office, the movie’s presence on the streaming service – and as a potential exclusive – is a smart move to entice potential HBO Max buyers.

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips’ Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. The movie is not part of the DC Extended Universe, and seems to play into Warner Bros.’s interests of making creator-driven superhero movies over necessarily building a hyper-connected shared universe… At least for the time being.

Joker is now playing in theaters.
