Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have indicated in the past that Game of Thrones, based on the series of books George R.R. Martin, would have a shortened final season.
HBO President Casey Bloys recently talked about Game of Thrones and how the question really is about how many episodes they choose to do and not whether the show will come back at all. He also “hopes” that the showrunners will be willing to do more than six episodes for season eight.
“The only thing we’re working out is how many episodes they want to do. They’re still figuring it out because I think they’re trying to get a shape of the season. They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It’s all about how many they’re comfortable [with]. But I’ll always take more. If you’re afraid we’re not going to do an eighth season, I assure you we’re going to.”
Game of Thrones season seven will premiere summer 2017.
