Hellboy returns to the big screen next year with David Harbour in the titular role, though fans of Guillermo del Toro’s two films about the Paranormal Investigator have high expectations of the new adaption. Makeup designer Joel Harlow admitted that Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films are a tough act to follow and discussed how they approached creating new designs unlike those seen in previous movies:
“I love the Del Toro films and absolutely appreciate all the characters that were brought to life in them. It’s a tough act to follow for sure, so we all made a conscious decision to not reference any of the live action versions that came before. We focused on the artwork and the comics.”

Hellboy is aiming for an R-rating as it will have a darker, greater emphasis on horror than its predecessors as it attempts to differentiate itself from the previous films from Guillermo del Toro and go for a tone closer to that of the original source material.
Directed by Neil Marshall from a script written by co-written by character creator Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Aron Coleite, Hellboy stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, and Daniel Dae Kim.
Hellboy will be released in theaters on April 12, 2019.
