‘Hellboy’ Reboot To Feature Loads Of Blood & Practical Effects

According to director Neil Marshall, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen will feature loads of blood and practical effects to suit its R-rating.

While I’m sure plenty of fans are still a bit disappointed that we won’t be getting a Hellboy 3 from director Guillermo Del Toro and star Ron Perlman, the new reboot, entitled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, already sounds like it has plenty of great things going for it, with Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) directing and David Harbour (Stranger Things) starring, as well as its R-rating. And judging from recent remarks made by the director, it sounds like the filmmakers are definitely aiming to make good on that rating.

During a recent appearance on the Post Mortem With Mick Garris podcast, Marshall spoke about how the film will take full advantage of it’s R-rating. Here’s what the director said:

“We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. Nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.”

Marshall also revealed that the goal is to use as much practical effects as possible:

“It’s definitely going to be as practical as we can possibly make it. I love to do stuff in camera whenever I possibly can, and use CG as the amazing tool that it is, to enhance or expand upon the world, but not to use it to replace reality, when you can do it [for] real.”

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is directed by Neil Marshall from a script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and original comic book creator Mike Mignola. David Harbour will star as Hellboy.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen will hit theaters sometime in 2018.
