‘Hellboy’ Reboot Will Have Greater Emphasis On Horror

The Hellboy franchise is getting an R-rated movie reboot, courtesy of director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones). The intent with the movie is to create an adaptation that’s closer to the original comics in terms of tone, and one of the writers of the movie’s screenplay has said that the horror feel to the film has been upped significantly as a result.

Screenwriter Andrew Cosby (Haunted, Eureka) got a moment to speak with Silver Screen Beat about the reboot (which was announced on Monday) and mentioned that the new film is going to adhere more closely to the source material by being scarier in nature:

“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil [Marshall] said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”

Cosby noted that the film’s script is already complete and that the people involved are happy with it, but the people involved are still working as hard as they can with his screenwriter Christopher Golden and series creator Mike Mignola to make the best possible Hellboy movie that they can.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen does not yet have a release date, but it may begin filming this September if everything falls into place. The picture will star Stranger Things actor David Harbour.
