Henry Cavill walked away from the table to return for what would have been his fourth appearance as Superman in what would have been a quick cameo in DC’s upcoming Shazam! movie starring Zachary Levi. Although there have been rumors suggesting Superman will appear in the film, after all, the Superman cameo is rumored to not feature the face of Henry Cavill himself. At the time reports first emerged that the Batman v Superman and Justice League star wouldn’t be reprising his role as Superman in the near future, Warner Bros. was reported to be considering casting Michael B. Jordan to succeed Henry Cavill at some point down the road.
After a recent opinion piece from Comic Book Resources posited the question as to whether or not Superman actually needs to be white, former Superman Dean Cain, who played the Last Son of Krypton in the hit 90s series Lois & Clark, took to Twitter to remind fans he was the first non-white actor to take on the role. Dean Cain himself, born Dean George Tanaka is of Japanese, French, Canadian, Welsh, and Irish descent.
Superman, of course, has not always appeared as a white male in the comics as Earth 23’s Superman, Calvin Ellis is African American. Which is, in fact, the same Superman that Michael B. Jordan himself has come out and said he’d like to play since Henry Cavill dropped out of negotiations. Calvin Ellis, similar to Clark Kent’s Kal-El, is a Kryptonian named Kalel and is also the President of the United States on Earth 23.
While there doesn’t seem to be any plans to bring a new Superman film to fruition any time soon as the studio is reportedly shelving the superhero to give the spotlight to its standalone Supergirl film which is currently in developed with Oren Uziel writing the script, Calvin Ellis could be the perfect Superman to bring to the big screen to replace Henry Cavill after his cousin gets her proper time to shine in her very own feature film.
So what do you think? Who would you like to see replace Henry Cavill as Superman? Would you still like to see Henry Cavill return for another outing?
Following Aquaman, which is now playing, the DCEU continues in April with Shazam! on April 5, 2019, which will be followed by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019.
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Directed by David F. Sandberg, DC Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.
Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the current DC cinematic universe as we learn it.
