Superman Lives was a Superman project that was in production during the ’90s with Nicholas Cage attached to play the DC Comics icon. It was set to be directed by Batman helmer Tim Burton and adapted the popular Death of Superman comic book arc. Sadly, Warner Bros. cancelled the movie after experiencing a series of box office bombs that included Batman & Robin, which ended the studio’s faith in comic book adaptations for some time. But it seems that at least one person wanted to see the Nicholas Cage Superman film happen.
The image below sees Nicholas Cage effectively replace Henry Cavill as Superman. He has a sliver and blue suit on as opposed to the classic one from the comics. His hair is grey and oddly cut with a black background behind him. The caption above sells the image as the look Nicholas Cage would have sported as Superman in an alternate universe.
The film, of course, was sadly not meant to be. Eventually, Nicholas Cage would play a comic book character in the twp Ghost Rider films. Superman came back to the big screen in 2006’s Superman Returns, a project Henry Cavill auditioned for. However, Henry Cavill didn’t get to play Superman until 2013’s Man of Steel.
Unfortunately, Henry Cavill’s future as Superman is currently uncertain, with Warner Bros. reportedly planning to put the character aside for the time being. Instead, Cavill will soon trade in his Superman suit for the lead role in Netflix’s highly-anticipated adaptation of The Witcher.
Based on the fantasy series of novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, Netflix’s The Witcher will follow Henry Cavill as the monster slayer for hire named Geralt of Rivia. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich will also serve as an executive producer on the series while Alik Sakharov, Alex Garcia Lopez, and Charlotte Brändström are on board as directors for the eight-episode first season.
What do you think? Would you have liked to have seen Nicholas Cage play Superman? Should Warner Bros keep Henry Cavill on as Superman? Let us know in the comments!
Henry Cavill was last seen as Superman in 2017’s Justice League. Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
Justice League is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Nicholas Cage, Henry Cavill and the future of the DC Extended Universe.
