Henry Cavill’s ‘The Witcher’ To Debut On Netflix In Late 2019

Netflix is eyeing a fall 2019 release date for The Witcher starring Superman actor Henry Cavill.

Many video game fans were initially excited when it was announced that Netflix was going to be making a high-budget, live-action adaptation of the immensely popular The Witcher series. Fans then got a huge announcement as Superman actor Henry Cavill signed on to play Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of The Witcher franchise. However, outside of a lackluster production announcement with Henry Cavill teasing his look as Geralt, not much is known about the series. Recently, though, Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos provided a bit of an update. While talking to Variety about Netflix’s upcoming 2019 lineup, Sarandos revealed that The Witcher will debut on the streaming service during the third quarter of 2019.

“Well, definitely in the third quarter, we’ve got new episodes and new seasons of some of our most loved and most watched shows on Netflix, ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Casa de Papel,’ ‘Orange Is the New Black,’ ’13 Reasons Why,’ ‘Elite,’ which was a big hit for us right out of Spain, a new season from Ryan Murphy of ‘The Politician,’ a brand new show on Netflix that we think our audiences are going to love,” he said. “And then you start seeing later in the fourth quarter some of our bigger film investments coming through like ‘Irishman,’ like ‘6 Underground’ and also a big new original series that we’re currently shooting in Hungary called ‘The Witcher,’ that is an enormous European IP, very popular game and Book IP, that we think is going to make a really fun global series.”

With shooting still underway, not much is known about the series. However, what we can expect is that the series will be eight episodes long. While no specific day has been selected for the show’s debut, fans can expect to see it later this year.

The Witcher is sure to thrill with a cast led by Henry Cavill. As it stands, The Witcher is shaping up to be very interesting and could possibly be the video game adaptation fans have been waiting for. Based on the fantasy series of novels and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, Netflix’s The Witcher will follow the monster slayer for hire named Geralt of Rivia. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich will also serve as an executive producer on the series while Alik Sakharov, Alex Garcia Lopez and Charlotte Brändström are on board as directors for the eight-episode first season.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe, Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson as Eist, Adam Levy as Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Aretuza, and Millie Brady as Princess Renfri, with Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers.
