The film will reboot the universe!
Paramount clearly has a lot planned for the GI Joe film franchise. The studio had previously attempted to turn the iconic 80s cartoon into a live-action film series with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Both films were critically panned but made an otherwise decent amount of money at the worldwide box office but didn’t seem to have a lot of staying power beyond their theatrical run.
Paramount currently has multiple GI Joe films in the works including Henry Golding’s Snake Eyes film, a follow up to that film which will expand upon the GI Joe universe. In addition, a film based around the character Chuckles is also in development, which could easily lead some to suspect that the upcoming film may be the start of a widespread reboot of the series. Now Henry Golding himself has confirmed this.
While speaking to NME, Henry Golding confirmed that Snake Eyes would be a reboot of the series:
“They’ve recreated G.I. Joe into something very cool and a far throw from what we’ve seen thus far on the big screen. I think there’s room for many spin-offs, to be honest. This, I think, will be the launch of a brand-new franchise.”
What do you all make of Henry Golding’s words? Are you surprised that Snake Eyes is the start of a full GI Joe reboot? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Directed by Robert Schwentke from a script written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Snake Eyes star Henry Golding as the titular character, Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, and Steven Allerick as Ninja Commando. Actors Haruka Abe and Takehiro Hira have also been cast in undisclosed roles.
Snake Eyes is currently scheduled to be released on October 22, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the GI Joe franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
