Tom Holland On Why Tony Stark Doesn’t Want Spider-Man To Be An Avenger

Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has opened up on why Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is resistant to the web-slinger becoming an Avengers.

Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has opened up on why Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is resistant to the web-slinger becoming an official member of The Avengers in the new film.

After being recruited by Iron Man to help him in his fight against Team Cap in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming follows Peter Parker now under the guidance and leadership of Stark in hopes he will eventually become an Avenger.

But in a recent chat with Collider, Holland was asked about the Father-Son dynamic between Peter and Tony when Holland explained that Tony is feeling responsible for Peter and wants to make sure Peter stays away from real danger while the young hero is still discovering the responsibility of his powers and what it means to be a hero:

“It’s interesting more so from the point of Tony Stark because he sort of has the responsibility of someone else other than himself. He really has to think about keeping Peter Parker safe, and he does that by telling him to be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man rather than this world-saving Spider-Man. He says help the old lady across the street, help get the cat out of the tree, but Spider-Man wants more.”

Holland went further to assure that “Spider-Man wants to be an Avenger,” but that “the reason Tony doesn’t want him to be an Avenger is because he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to him.”

The film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly and Bokeem Woodbine, as well as Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Michael Chernus, Kenneth Choi, Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Angourie Rice and Abraham Attah. Here’s the official synopsis:

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017. You can check out our review for the film here.
