“I was kind of struggling, to be honest. It was the first movie I had ever done in America. I was pretty tight. I was nervous. I was average, to be honest, at best. No one was saying anything and I sort of thought I was getting away with it, but I wasn’t.”
Tom Rothman, a studio executive, spoke to the Australian actor during filming and told him that, while he believed that Hugh Jackman was right for the role, his light wasn’t shining very brightly as Logan.
“He told me that he believed in me, that from the moment he’d seen my tape he had a gut feeling I was the guy, but watching my dailies was like watching someone put a lampshade over a light.”
Those words have stuck with Hugh Jackman all this time and thankfully, Rothman decided to keep him in the movie because, regardless of his words, the executive saw something in Jackman. That early belief in the actor has paid off because we now can’t imagine anyone else more perfect for the role.
Hugh Jackman will be playing Wolverine for the final time in Logan, out March 3, 2017.
