Hugo Weaving Will Not Return For Amazon’s ‘The Lord Of The Rings’

Longtime Lord of the Rings actor Hugo Weaving has revealed that he will not return for the Amazon series and dove into why.

When the premise for Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series was revealed it brought about many questions as to how it would connect to the events of the films. The series is said to take place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth and several characters featured in the various Peter Jackson films were very much alive during this age. This included Ian McKellen’s Gandalf, Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel, Hugo Weaving’s Elrond.

In the films, Hugo Weaving portrayed Elrond in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and its two sequels, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Years later he would reprise his role once again for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Some wondered if he would be willing to reprise the role for the upcoming Amazon series but the actor seems fairly against it.

While speaking to Variety, Hugo Weaving talked about the idea of reprising the role for the Amazon series and why he had no interest in it:

“No way. Absolutely no. Matrix might have happened. But Lord of the Rings, no, I would never — I’m not interested in that at all. Look, I loved being in New Zealand with all those great people, and it was like going back to a family but actually, to be honest, I think everyone had more than enough of it.”

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series is being developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who will lead a writer’s room that includes Game of Thrones alum Bryan Cogman. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J. A. Bayona is set to direct multiple episodes of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series.

Full details on Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series are currently unknown, though it is reported to be before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring during the Second Age of Middle-Earth. The Lord of the Rings series is produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema. The series stars Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.
