Disney’s line-up of live-action remakes continues with a new version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which the studio previously adapted as an animated musical in 1996 based on Victor Hugo’s 1831 classic novel. Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang will write the script and will reportedly draw from Disney’s animated feature and Hugo’s book.
Josh Gad, who voiced the lovable snowman Olaf in Disney animated hit Frozen, is producing alongside Mandeville Films and is said to potentially play the lead character, Quasimodo, though studio insiders reportedly say casting is not solid at this time.
Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the score and songs for the 1996 film, will return to handle the music for the remake. However, the new Hunhback film will not draw from the staged production both men produced. The duo earned an Academy Award nomination for their work on the animated film.
Hunchback is reportedly not a priority for the studio at this time.
Josh Gad is set to reprise his role as Olaf in Disney’s Frozen 2 when the long-awaited sequel hits theaters on November 22, 2019.
