Lionsgate Eyeing ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Film Based On New Book

Lionsgate is eyeing a Hunger Games prequel film based on the upcoming novel by original trilogy writer Suzanne Collins.

Scholastic is set to release Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games prequel book next May and Lionsgate is working “closely” with the author with hopes of developing a new film based on the novel. Set 64 years before the original Hunger Games book, the prequel will be “timed for the reaping of the Tenth Hunger Games.”

Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, made the following statement on Lionsgate’s collaboration with Suzanne Collins:

“As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published. We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie.”

The original trilogy centered on Katniss Everdeen’s rising popularity on the televised battle royale death match called The Hunger Games and her subsequent leadership role in the uprising against the fascist government. Lionsgate released four films based on the novels starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence as Everdeen opposite Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, and Elizabeth Banks. The film quadrilogy collectively grossed nearly $3 billion at the worldwide box office.
