Idris Elba Teases His Role In James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

Idris Elba playfully teased the identity of his character in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn is currently hard at work directing Warner Bros. and DC’s The Suicide Squad, a follow-up to the first live-action film centered on the supervillain team from director David Ayer. Joining the crew of returning Suicide Squad cast members is an ensemble of newcomers that includes Idris Elba.

However, the identity of Idris Elba’s character in The Suicide Squad remains unknown and the actor was asked if he could reveal details on his role during an interview with Variety at the Cats premiere. Of course, Idris Elba could not share any new information on the James Gunn film, but he did have some fun with fans by saying, “I can totally tell you his name,” before mouthing something inaudible and apologizing when the interviewer attributed the silence to sound issues.

When Idris Elba was cast in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, it was reported the actor was going to take over the role of Deadshot from Will Smith. However, the creative team opted to have Idris Elba play a new character instead, with rumors suggesting he was going to portray Bronze Tiger.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the Suicide Squad in his upcoming movie.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
