Following a record-breaking debut, Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory has once again managed to secure the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with a massive $73.2 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The animated movie has so far grossed $397 million globally and has already become one of the highest-grossing movies of the year after only a couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence opened to $41.6 million in North America, which is definitely disappointing considering that it had a budget of $165 million. However, the movie did way better overseas, where it earned $102 million for a worldwide total of $143.6 million for its first week. That’s probably not enough for 20th Century Fox to green lit another sequel just yet, but there’s still hope.
Coming in third place was Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Central Intelligence, the buddy cop movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, which brought in $18.4 million. Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Shallows starring Blake Lively also opened this weekend and exceeded expectations with an impressive $16.7 million debut.
