It was one thing to see most of the Guardians of the Galaxy lose their lives in Avengers: Infinity War, but now one Guardian has made the ultimate sacrifice in the current Infinity Wars comic arc.
So instead of Thanos being the cause of the recent problems, you’ve got Gamora trying to collapse the universe’s souls into the Soul Stone and then create her own reality. This didn’t go well, as you’d expect, so in enters Adam Warlock. In order to revert Gamora’s universe-shifting changes, he had to remake the universe and create one for the new heroes conjured up because of Gamora’s doing. Copying a universe requires the use of two doorways, and here’s where Drax enters the scene. Drax and his second soul, anyway.
Drax and his second soul, that of his father, Arthur Douglas, came together in order to save both universes. So, another mission accomplished courtesy of the Guardians of the Galaxy, right? Well, almost. Warlock delivers the news that to return the lost souls, the heroes must escape the Soul World. In order to do that, someone must stay behind to keep the door open. Sheesh, and you thought that Hodor had it tough in Game of Thrones, and then Infinity Wars comes along and does this.
This sacrifice costs Drax his life, yes, but the Infinity Wars follow-up shows that Adam Warlock offered both Drax and Arthur Douglas a chance to come back to life. But Drax and Arthur concluded that their watches had ended and their fights were over. While Adam does not know where Drax’s soul ultimately ends up, it’s revealed that the original form of the Guardians of the Galaxy character is battling off the likes of Krees and Skrulls. In a way, it’s what Drax always wanted.
But unless his name is Uncle Ben, no one truly stays dead forever. So could Drax ultimately return at some point after the Infinity Wars event? Time will tell, but let us know your thoughts on this major event in the comments below.
