‘Iron Fist’: A Fight With The Dragon Shou-Lao Is Not In The Series

If you were expecting actor Finn Jones to face off against a dragon in Iron Fist like in Game of Thrones, you might be a little disappointed by this. According to Yahoo News, Finn Jones confirmed that Danny Rand will not face off against Shou-Lao like in the comics; at least not onscreen. He says that it is heavily implied that the fight happened, but viewers will not witness it in any sort of way.

“I’d love to have the budget for these shows to have a full-on Game of Thrones style dragon, but unfortunately you know, we have budget restraints. That’s the nature of the show.”

“We do allude to it in Iron Fist, in a very intelligent way” he added. “And definitely in The Defenders… but I think, you know, we’ve got to be realistic.”

Earlier in the year, Finn Jones elaborated on the allusion to the dragon. He told CBR:

“He comes back and says: ‘Hey, guess what? I’ve been in this place called K’un Lun for years, I’ve got this thing called the Iron Fist and I met a dragon! And everybody’s like, ‘What the fuck are you talking about? You’re insane.’”

In the comics, Shou-Lao is a significant part of the Iron Fist origin story. As a rite of passage, each candidate throughout history has had to defeat the dragon to fully obtain the power of the Iron Fist. While somewhat disappointing that Shou-Lao will not make an appearance in the series, I think it was a stretch to believe he would anyway. Especially since the Netflix shows have always tried to be pretty grounded in their approach to superheroes.
