When Iron Fist began casting, the internet erupted in a campaign to make the character an Asian-American instead of the Caucasian background the character usually had. People wished for Marvel to further diversify their line-up with the first Asian-centric hero, yet Marvel went the comic accurate route and cast Finn Jones. People were worried Danny Rand would be portrayed as a white savior to the Asian culture, yet Scott Buck, Iron Fist’s showrunner, ensures audiences this will not be the case.

“When Marvel came to me with this idea, I’d never heard of Iron Fist or Danny Rand. I had never read the comics. What [Marvel TV head] Jeph Loeb pitched me specifically was this character Danny Rand, and that was the story that pulled me in. That intrigued me. So the other aspects I only learned about afterwards, and I can say most definitively Danny Rand is no white savior. He’s trying to save himself, if anything.”

The character is only embraced in the culture, not trying to impose on it. And the ones in outcry over Jones’ casting should hopefully be set at ease once Iron Fist releases this March. And supporting character Colleen Wing will be portrayed by Asian actress Jessica Henwick.

Iron Fist drops on Netflix on March 17th, 2017.
