Early Concept Design For Mark I Iron Man Suit Revealed

An early design for the Mark I Iron Man suit has been revealed.

It’s hard to imagine the Marvel Cinematic Universe began over a decade with Iron Man, which hit cinemas in 2008. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., the film became an unprecedented success, garnering critical and commercial acclaim. The film’s post-credits scene teased the Avengers initiative, which planted seeds for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the film’s in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued to progress, so did Iron Man’s suit, becoming more colourful and complicated.

Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding took to Instagram to share one of the earliest designs of the Iron Man suit, taking it back to its humbling beginnings. The suit in question is the Mark I, which Tony Stark built in a cave when captured by terrorists. Be sure to swipe right to get a closer look at the Iron Man Mark I suit.

As stated in the caption, this Iron Man painting was done in 2006, two years before the titular film hit cinemas. Since the Mark I suit, Iron Man has adopted a red and yellow color scheme. We’ve also seen hundreds of different suits that the character has created that serve multiple purposes. While his first suit may have been extremely bulky and hard on the eyes, it’s impressive to see how far the creator’s ingenuity has gone.
