'Harry Potter' author J.K. Rowling says young Dumbledore may be be openly gay in the sequels to 'Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them'.
With the young Albus Dumbledore set to appear in second of five Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them films, Rowling told a group of reporters suggested they may portray an open gay Dumbledore.
“Well, I’m very comfortable with the question. I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story, there’s lots to unpack in that relationship.”
Variety reports that Rowling added:
“You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man,” Rowling added. “We’ll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned,” she said taking a beat, “watch this space.”
Rowling is certainly playing coy, but considering she herself will be writing the screenplays for the Fantastic Beasts films, it would be surprising if she didn’t take the opportunity to finally portray an openly gay Dumbledore.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
Directed by David Yates and written by J. K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, Carmen Ejogo, Jenn Murray, Faith Wood-Blagrove and Colin Farrell.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in theaters on November 18, 2016.
