J.K. Simmons Is Commissioner Gordon in ‘Justice League’

The D.C. Extended Universe has a Commissioner Gordon and he looks a lot like J. Jonah Jameson.

The Hollywood Reporter just broke that Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons is joining Zack Snyder’s Justice League as the longtime Batman ally, which is gearing up for principal photography in April for release on November 17, 2017.

Featuring the lineup of Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Simmons is the latest addition to the confirmed supporting cast, which includes Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Mera (Amber Heard).

Simmons has a history in superhero movies, (in)famously playing loud newspaper publisher J. Jonah Jameson in the three Sam Raimi Spider-Man films. Popular since he last played the role in 2007, there were calls to bring back him back for the 2012 reboot and even for the forthcoming 2017 MCU reboot. This casting would likely put any rumors of that to bed.

He follows in the footsteps of Gary Oldman who played Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Oldman was preceded by Pat Hingle who portrayed him in the four original Bat flicks. Simmons seems like he can straddle the gravitas Oldman brought while upping the dry humor (though maybe not the buffoonery) of Hingle’s portrayal.

I persistently saw Bryan Cranston as my ideal Gordon but pulling Simmons out of the proverbial casting hat is an pretty ingenious move by Snyder. I think a lot of fans will be happy with this choice.
