‘James Bond 25’ Director Cary Fukunaga Talks Plans For The Next 007 Film

During an interview with The Inquirer, director Cary Fukunaga offered fans a hint at what his plans for the 25th James Bond film will be and addressed rumors about 007’s next mission.

In September, True Detective director Cary Joji Fukunaga was announced as the new director of the 25th James Bond film after Danny Boyle left the project over creative differences. Now, the filmmaker has stated that he intends to continue the character arc that Daniel Craig’s 007 started in Casino Royale:

“In his first Bond movie, Casino Royale, [Daniel Craig] brought an incredible amount of vulnerability and humanity to the character, which was a big shift from Pierce Brosnan’s run. In terms of what I can bring to change the character, Bond is on a character arc that started with Casino Royale, and I will be carrying that on. There will be changes, I am sure. As in any story, a character has to change in order [to have] a narrative.”

As for the rumors suggesting the film will step away from classic Bond characters who were reimagined in previous Daniel Craig 007 films, such as Blofeld or Q, Cary Fukunaga noted that the screenplay has to be complete and that those characters will be included if the story permits:

“Who is saying those rumors? We haven’t finished the screenplay, so there is no way that anyone could know that. Those are two extraordinary actors, so if there is space for them in the story, I would absolutely want them there. But I don’t know yet what it’s going to be.”

Production on the 25th James Bond film is set to begin on March 4, 2019, at Pinewood Studios. Details on the project are currently unknown, though it is set to be Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 after having played the character in Casino RoyaleQuantum of Solace,Skyfall, and Spectre.

James Bond 25 is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 14, 2020.
