James Cameron Confirms Leaked ‘Avatar’ Titles Are Real

James Cameron has confirmed those leaked Avatar titles which made their way onto the web last year are indeed real.

Documents obtained by BBC last fall revealed the possible titles for all four of the Avatar sequels which are in development. The titles included The Way of Water, The Seed Bearer, The Tulkun Rider, and The Quest for Eywa. While at the premiere for the long-in-development Alita: Battle Angel, which Cameron wrote and produced, the legendary director was asked whether or not the titles were real. Although Cameron remained tight-lipped at first, he opened up and revealed the titles are in fact being considered, however, they have yet to be made official:

“I can neither confirm nor deny… All right, here’s what I’ll tell ya. Those titles are among titles that are in consideration. And no final decisions have been made yet.”

While James Cameron has completed production on the first of two Avatar sequels, uncertainty surrounds the possible fourth and fifth installments of the franchise due to the looming Disney-Fox merger. Although Fox previously planted flags on the release calendar for Avatar 4 and 5, the studios reportedly want to hold off greenlighting the films until seeing the for box office results for Avatar 2 and 3.

Plot details remain under wraps, however, the sequels will continue to bring the world of Pandora to life and expand Cameron’s vision they explore new locations on the planet not seen in the first film. The sequels are said to be four standalone experiences that will form together one epic saga that Cameron has spent the last several years writing.

The original Avatar received mostly positive reviews from critics and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It popularized 3D in cinemas and remains the top-grossing film at the global box office with $2.7B after becoming the first film to cross the $2 billion mark. The film was first released on December 18, 2009, followed by a subsequent release of a special edition on August 27, 2010.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, David Thewlis. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2020.
