‘Terminator’: James Cameron Explains His Decision To Revive Franchise

Last month, director James Cameron revealed that he was negotiating to revive the Terminator franchise with a new trilogy designed the bring the film series to a conclusion. The decision may have come as a surprise to fans, considering Cameron left the series behind after directing the critically acclaimed first two installments of the franchise. Now, Cameron has explained why decided to return to the Terminator franchise during an interview with IGN.

Cameron explained that his decision came after he began asking himself a series of questions on how the franchise could explore new themes that were relevant to the current decade:

“I got out of the Terminator business after Terminator 2 because I didn’t control the underlying IP. I had sold it off very early on when I was nobody, not a director, nothing, and I was just thrilled to be working on a movie. You know, when I became aware of the fact that I could get back into a control position on the rights, then I started to ask myself, artistically, is there anything there? Is there anything to be said that I haven’t already said, and that would even be relevant in the 2020s, when these hypothetical films would come out? I thought, ‘Well, let’s look at that.’ I mean, a lot of the things that were science fiction in Terminator are now around us. You know, from predator drones and actual discussions on the ethics on having a robot have its own kill decision possibilities, things like that. It’s actually happening. So, Okay, maybe there is room for a film that examines these themes. It just has to be retooled for an audience’ expectations from now.”

Though few details on Cameron’s exact plan for the series are being kept under wrap, Arnold Schwarzenegger recently stated that he will begin work on a sixth Terminator film next year.

While I personally feel it might be best to retire the Terminator film series, perhaps Cameron can provide a compelling conclusion that will allow to beloved science fiction franchise to end on a high note?
